So yeah, this movie kind of sort of really sucked. I really didn't enjoy Vacation if you couldn't tell from my opening sentence. This poor attempt at comedy left me with a sour taste in my mouth and a lighter wallet. The raunchy, senseless, near stupid humor left me in almost utter awe. When I laughed, I laughed at the pure stupidity of this film being released. Although at points barely funny, Vacation was a disaster.
Christina Applegate, why would you ever agree to this film? You are legitimately funny and you just dumbed yourself down for a movie like this. The only member of the family I actually laughed at was the youngest son Kevin (played by Steele Stebbins). And I only laughed at him because I find children cursing hilarious. My slight immaturity helped me thoroughly enjoy his performance.
I did enjoy the cameos in this film. Seeing Chevy Chase was great and he actually was funny for the thirty seconds he was in it. Seeing Michael Peña and Chris Hemsworth briefly was great too. Charlie Day also had a solid cameo. Yet, I probably enjoyed all these cameos because they were brief. The characters weren't beaten to death with horrible writing and poor jokes. They popped in shortly, got some good laughs, and were never seen again. Unlike the family, who just begged the audience for laughs.
I'm usually not harsh when it comes to comedies. I try to see the big picture and see the inspiration. Yet, this movie was just stupid. I never really found myself finding the material funny. I just laughed at the stupidity and the clear lack of effort. They relied on sex jokes and teenage humor to guide this film. Don't see this movie. See Ant Man. See Southpaw. Enjoy your life. Don't subject yourself to just pure crap.
