Ricki and The Flash- Movie Review

Review by: Matthew Petrouskie

Rating: B-

The summer is usually too early in the year to start making predictions about Oscar and Golden Globe nominees. However, there is always one exception, Meryl Streep.

Meryl Streep once again proves why she is revered as one of greatest movie actresses in her newest movie Ricki and the Flash. This movie follows Ricki Rendazzo, a delusional, broke front woman for a washed up rock band. When her daughter unravels after a painful divorce, she finds herself having to confront a family who she abandoned years ago in search or her rock star dreams.

The acting in this movie was phenomenal. Meryl gave an unsurprisingly fantastic performance (which will undoubtedly garner her an Oscar and Golden Globe nomination.) The supporting cast of Kevin Kline, Audra McDonald, and Mamie Gummer (Streep’s daughter) was stellar as well. Rick Springfield, the one hit musical wonder of the 80s, showed off his acting chops and gave a certain level of musical authenticity needed for the film.

The problem with this movie lies in how it was set up. The climax of the movie happened only halfway through the film, leading to superfluous dilemmas that detracted from the general theme. Less could have been done and the point still would have been made.

All in all the movie is worth the watch, but worth seeing on demand rather than in theaters.
