Suicide Squad- Movie Review

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of seeing my most anticipated summer 2016 film, Suicide Squad. For well over a year, I looked forward to seeing what DC was planning with this new property. DC was finally putting some of their best characters on the big screen. I was beyond excited because the marketing was next level. When Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice was just okay, I became a little alarmed about this property. It turns out I should've been extremely alarmed because this film was a mess.

The only positive this movie has to offer is likable characters. The squad together works extremely well and, in a better written film, had the potential to really deliver an awesome movie. I don't blame one actor for this movie. They were all on point. Will Smith as Deadshot was fantastic. He wasn't overbearing and really fit in well into this universe. I also loved Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. Her dynamic with Jared Leto's Joker was what fans have wanted to see in a movie for years. Speaking of Joker, Jared Leto was also good, for the five minutes he's in the film. Guys, he's barely in the movie. He was a centerpiece of marketing and was barely in the film. The guy went full method for a basic cameo. He's awesome when he's in the film and I want to see more, but don't go into this expecting to see a lot of Joker. I also want to tip the cap to Viola Davis because she was an absolute badass in this film. She's basically DC's Nick Fury but a lot more ruthless, which was a nice twist. Through and through the cast works in this film. Almost everybody is likable.

This movie fails in the story. There's no plot. I honestly couldn't tell you what happens or why anything happens. It felt like a poorly produced video game for the most part. What made the story worse was the villain. I guess this is a semi spoiler, but if you saw trailer you'd know The Enchantress (played by Cara Delevingne) is the villain. She was god awful. Yet again, I can't blame her because the writing was just god awful. The Enchantress is Fantastic Four (2015) bad. The character was unacceptably terrible. The writing also only showed backstory. We learned a lot about each character, but they didn't take the time to raise stakes or for you to even give a little bit of a crap about any of the squad. Instead of good dialogue, we got really average action. There was no Avengers moment where they all assembled and the audience lost their mind. The team is basically forced together and yes, they bond. You just don't care because the writing is next level bad.

Now, I have a heavy feeling this isn't the completed film. I really think a longer version will be released eventually on Blu-Ray because this movie didn't feel complete. The editing was a mess and you can tell studio executives cut some key stuff, just like they did for another "hit" DC film. The first act is good but the rest of the movie is just a hot mess. The issue here is DC tried really hard to appeal to the average movie goer here. There's a ton of fan service, which was appreciated at times. The film is full of great music and semi-decent laughs. Yet, with that, the movie suffered because the writing was next level awful. DC rushed this film and it's beyond noticeable.

This is the most disappointed I've ever been when it comes to a movie. I'm honestly shocked I'm writing about how bad Suicide Squad was. It's just a shame that DC still can't get it right. This movie has it's moments, it's just still a mess.
