Pixar has done it again. For the first time in what has felt like ages, Pixar has produced a hit. Since the success of Toy Story 3, the studio has produced three mediocre films. Cars 2, Brave, and Monsters University all commercially did well. Yet, they were missing the Pixar charm. They were childish animated films as opposed to timeless classics. I did little to no research on Inside Out. Besides seeing the initial teaser trailer, I knew absolutely nothing about it. Midway through the movie, I looked at my mother and said, "Pixar did it again."
I absolutely loved this movie. The humor was outright hilarious. Pixar really knows how to get big laughs from respectable, appropriate jokes. In Inside Out, the jokes were childish but not stupid. There wasn't tacky fart jokes like most animated movies. Inside Out used humor that appealed to mass audiences of all ages. Just like all three Toy Story films and Monsters Inc, this film spoke to both audiences. By both audiences, I mean the child and the parent. A person of any age will appreciate this film.
The characters in this movie are extremely lovable. The main character Joy (voiced by the hilarious Amy Poehler) is witty, funny, but extremely caring. The other main character, or emotion if you will, is Sadness (voiced by Phyllis Smith). She was by far my favorite character in the movie. She is absolutely hilarious. I found myself cracking up at almost everything she said. I also have to tip my cap to Lewis Black who was the voice Anger. He was arguably the fan favorite amongst the adult crowds. He was gut busting funny.
Now, I don't want to give a synopsis of this movie. I feel like that ruins the magic of this film. The plot and concept of this movie is extremely original. It challenges the audience to rethink life and to cherish loved ones. Inside Out hits you where it hurts, but makes you smile as well. The major risk with this movie was the message not hitting it home with the younger audiences. Conceptually, it's a little hard for children. Yet, every child in the audience at my viewing understood it. Inside Out is a film that will make you laugh and warm your heart. Like classic Pixar films, Inside Out will stick with audiences of every generation.
