The loose adaption of Mark Millar's Civil War began filming in April of this year. The development of the screenplay began in late 2013. Both dates seriously hinder Spiderman's role in the film. In 2013, Spiderman was an exclusive Sony property. The year before, the hit film The Amazing Spiderman hit theaters and did extremely well. Sony firmly believed in the property and even made a sequel. In 2013, nobody in Marvel thought obtaining Spiderman for a movie was remotely possible. Unless they dramatically changed the original screenplay, I don't think the web slinging, wise cracking vigilante will play the role he played in the Civil War comic storyline.
You also have to note the beginning of production date. This film started production in April. The announcement of Tom Holland landing the part of Spiderman was only announced about a week ago. If Spiderman was a pivotal role in this film, wouldn't he have been casted nearly immediately? Or wouldn't they have stalled production to ensure Spiderman would be on set? Both of those questions convince me Spiderman's role from the comics to the film has changed dramatically.
Now, you're probably wondering what Spiderman will do in this movie. And who will take Spiderman's pivotal role that he had in the comics. For those that aren't familiar with the comics, Spiderman was caught in the middle of the battle between Captain America and Iron Man. The whole fight was over the Superhero Registration Act, which required superheroes to register with the government. Iron Man was for the bill, while Captain America was completely against it. Spiderman played to both sides in different parts of the storyline. He initially supported the Act, yet eventually ended up on Captain America's side. So, why is any of this important?
Spiderman's role in the comics is gigantic. Certain actions that he makes are pivotal in the storyline. Clearly, the movie's take will be different. Spiderman's role is significantly dumbed down. If anything, I think Marvel wrote in Black Panther (played by Chadwick Boseman) to fill that big role. You have to realize that Marvel was only allowed to use Spiderman as of a couple of months ago. Most of the script had already been finished. There's no way they could've rewrote the entire screenplay to accommodate Spiderman. It would've completely derailed the project. This became even more clear when Marvel spent a lot of time casting the role. Clearly, there was no rush to cast the character. Production on the film began without him. All this being said, what will Spiderman do in the movie?
I firmly believe Spiderman will barely be in this movie. If anything, this film is being used as an easy way to introduce the new Spiderman into the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe). We may see him in a few scenes but besides that, I don't think he'll really be in it. I think Blank Panther will be the new intermediary. In terms of the gravity of Blank Panther's role, that has yet to be seen. We really don't know what they're keeping and omitting from the comics. But, brace yourself for Spiderman's role to be pretty insignificant in the film. He will get his chance to shine in solo movies and in other Marvel titles. The people at Marvel are just using Civil War as a glimpse into the character. We'll see what he can do and what he's like, but he'll probably just be a minor character.
Marvel's Civil War hit theaters in 2016. Speculation has already began in regards to a potential related post credit scene attached to Ant Man. As footage and post credits scenes are released, the roles of who does what will finally be cleared. Yet, until then, we can only speculate.
