Ant Man- Movie Review
Rating: B+
Marvel did it again. They went to space. They assembled the Avengers. And now, they changed the scale of superhero movies forever. Ant Man absolutely ruled. This was completely different than any previous Marvel film and it just worked so well.
Paul Rudd is an awesome addition to this world. His undying charm and wit blended perfectly with this heist-like film. The best part of this movie was the cast. Everybody worked so well with each other. Michael Douglas took this film super seriously and delivered a classic performance. Michael Peña also did a spectacular job. He was outright hilarious and I hope he somehow shows up in additional Marvel films. Evangeline Lily brought something great to this film as well. Without giving anything away, I'm certainly glad she'll be back for more Marvel films. This cast worked super well with each other and the dynamic each character brought was awesome.
Unlike any Marvel film, Ant Man was a heist film. The premise focuses on Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) assisting Hank Pym (Michael Douglass) and Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lily) in stopping Darren Cross (Corey Stoll) from releasing the "Yellow-Jacket" suit. It's super fun and just completely original. This didn't feel like a typical Marvel film. Ant Man stood on it's own without any outside context. This film would've worked by itself as a really awesome spy-like film. It just so happens that Ant Man is one small part of a huge picture.
The CGI in this film ruled. Marvel has yet again proved they know how to use CGI in such a fun and awe inspiring way. When Scott Lang shrinks down to ant size, it's remarkable. It looks so awesome. The bugs he interacts with also look super real. Not once did I notice they were all computerized. Ant Man tested the boundaries of what Marvel is capable of. And those boundaries were torn down and tossed to the side. I'm absolutely convinced Marvel can make a film on any hero and it will rule. They are just that good.
My only complaint with this film is the Yellow Jacket/Darren Cross character. Marvel has really struggled to produce good villains. With the exception of the beloved Loki, every Marvel villain thus far has been slightly mediocre. Do not get me wrong, Corey Stoll is really good in this film. I just didn't understand his motivation sometimes and they waited a while to explain key elements of his character. Besides that, I implore you to see Ant Man. (PS STAY AFTER THE FILM, A MID CREDITS SCENE AND POST CREDITS SCENE AWAIT YOU!)
